10 instructions for Proper Hygiene of Fresh Tattoos

Taking care of a fresh tattoo is essential to ensure proper healing and prevent infection. Follow these steps to maintain hygiene and protect your new ink:

1. Leave the Bandage On (Initial Protection)

• Your tattoo artist will apply a protective bandage after the session.

• Leave it on for the recommended time (usually 2–6 hours) to prevent dirt and bacteria from entering the area of fresh work.

• skin needs around 48h to be fully closed, so first 48 hours are the most important.

• I use a specialized adhesive wrap - second skin, which you should keep from 2 to 5 days.

• Change your sheets to clean one, after the appointment.

2. Wash Your Hands Before Touching Your Tattoo

• Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your tattoo.

• This minimizes the risk of infection.

3. Clean the Tattoo Gently

• Remove the bandage carefully.

• Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap (like unscented antibacterial soap).

• Use your clean hands, not a washcloth or sponge, to gently remove any blood, plasma, or ointment residue.

• Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry. Avoid rubbing the tattoo.

4. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment

• Use a tattoo-specific ointment, Panthenol cream is necessary. With Panthenol, I recommend our custom natural butter for tattoos which you can use in process of healing and after.

• Apply a very thin layer to keep the skin hydrated but not smothered. Over-application can suffocate the skin and delay healing.

5. Avoid Over-Washing

• Clean the tattoo 2–3 times a day for the first week.

• After washing, always apply a thin layer of ointment.

6. Keep It Moisturized

• Once the initial healing begins (2–3 days), switch to a natural tattoo butter.

• Continue applying lotion 2–3 times daily to prevent dryness and itching.

7. Avoid These Common Mistakes

• No Picking or Scratching: Let scabs or peeling skin fall off naturally to avoid scarring or pulling ink out.

• No Harsh Products: Avoid alcohol-based products, exfoliants, or scented lotions.

• No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, and baths for at least 2–3 weeks. Showering is fine.

• No Direct Sunlight: Keep your tattoo covered or apply SPF 30+ sunscreen (after healing) to prevent fading.

8. Wear Clean, Loose Clothing

• Choose breathable, loose-fitting clothes to reduce friction and irritation on the tattooed area.

9. Monitor for Infection

• Watch for signs of infection such as excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a strong odor. If these occur, consult a doctor promptly.

10. Follow Instructions we made

• Every tattoo may have slightly different aftercare recommendations based on the tattoo’s location and your skin type. It's important to follow instructions that we agreed on.

By following these steps, you can help your tattoo heal properly and ensure it looks its best for years to come.
